Birth and education
He was born on 24 August 1922 in the village of Nawazishpur in Raozan upazila of Chittagong district. He studied up to eighth grade in Raozan High School. Later, after the death of his father, he got involved in property problems and ended his formal education. He taught at Nawazishpur Primary School from 1942 to 1946. His father, Alhajj Sarfuddin, was an engineer working for the Rangoon Port Commission.
